Watchung, NJ Estate redesign

Our New Jersey interior design company was so happy to get a call to help with this newly built, classically designed home. The estate located in Watchung, New Jersey, on a sprawling piece of land, was recently built from the ground up by a noteworthy New Jersey builder, when my interior design company was brought on. We were hired to redesign the first floor rooms including the great room and living room, for a family who has an active lifestyle with kids and pets, who entertains often throwing large gallerings with their large family and friends in the home. For that reason we opted for all durable and washable fabrics, even bleach cleanable if needed, to accommodate our design clients’ lifestyle. We didnt want our clients worrying about the new furniture or rugs being soiled by food or pets, so we opted for heavy-duty materials including luxurious indoor-outdoor fabrics, combined with 100% wool pile pattern area rugs that can handle high traffic and clean easily and often without compromising their beauty. They also had an extensive art collection we wanted to take center stage, therefor bringing in furniture in neutrals and solid colors so the art could shine.

The home was in pristine condition as a new build home and therefor simply needed furniture to compliment the classical details while creating intimate spaces to counter the homes’ grand scale. The home had many classical details including heavy crown molding in all rooms, wooden arches in some of the doorways and openings, and vaulted ceilings, giving it a grandeous look and feel. For this reason we used many custom furniture pieces that myself and my interior design firm sketched and created mock ups for, which our furniture makers then built for us.

For the living room we used the stone fireplace as inspiration and color palette for the room design keeping with a neutral pallete to let the artwork speak. The drapes are a wool satin that kiss the floor and are functional to close if needed, and the furniture is all custom made including a tufted leather coffee table that doubles as extra seating when our client’s entertain. In the great room, our client’s chose the yellow paint color and wanted ample seating, thus we designed an extra long sectional sofa using a washable velvet, and added a custom leather coffee table, a pair of whimsical stools, and swivel chair. As the great room is a long rectangle we created additional seating in the two corners, with a custom L-shape upholstered bench in one corner, and an armchair with a foot stool in the other using a fine wool satin to add a luxurious feel to the space.
